Mathematics is a subject that all students can thrive in, and the Maths department tries to ensure that Mathematics is accessible to all. We endeavour to do this by passing on the love of the subject through engaging lessons, by ensuring student progress is monitored and by providing opportunities for extra-curricular activities throughout the subject that students will enjoy. We encourage students to become independent learners through a range of different teaching styles, questioning techniques and problem solving activities. We aim to provide all students with the opportunities to develop the skills that are so essential in today’s work place – problem solving skills, communication skills and the ability to work with others.
Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
At Key Stage 3, students build on the skills, knowledge and understanding they have already acquired at Key Stage 2, and take on increasing responsibility for planning and executing their work. They maintain positive attitudes towards mathematics. They extend their mathematical thinking by solving mathematical problems, working with increasing confidence and flexibility in solving unfamiliar problems or problems in unfamiliar contexts, communicating their work orally and in a variety of written forms, and reasoning mathematically, explaining their reasoning to others, using contexts from across the whole range of mathematics and as applied to real-life problems.
All KS4 students will study two GCSEs in mathematics which are both examined by WJEC. GCSE Mathematics will build on and progress from the levels of mathematics expected at the end of KS3 through the National Curriculum Programme of Study for Mathematics. It will extend to aspects of mathematics needed for progression to scientific, technical or further mathematical study. The GCSE in Mathematics – Numeracy will assess the mathematics that students will need in their everyday lives, in the world of work, and in other general curriculum areas.
Advanced Level Mathematics has been taught effectively at St Cenydd for many years and we are very proud of the achievement of the young people who have studied with us. Department staff are skilled and enthusiastic, and work hard alongside the pupils in order to maximise their grades. Advanced Level Mathematics allows students to enrich their mathematical experience and build a more solid foundation for pursuing careers in science, technology, economics, actuarial science and finance.
