A group of 50 pupils had the opportunity to experience live opera with a visit to the Welsh National Opera’s production of The Marriage of Figaro. For many students, it was their first time attending an opera—and what an introduction it was. With fabulous costumes and witty storytelling, the WNO performed brought this classic tale to life in a fresh and accessible way, including subtitles and a BSL interpreter. They even saw a complete set change, live on the stage. Mrs Joseph was moved and impressed with how the BSL signed the musical overture at the beginning of the opera.
Pupils were enthused by the experience. Below are just a few quotes from pupils.
“I really loved the opera. It had a lot of drama, plot twists, and comedic events!”
“I thought it was brilliant. The singing and overture were beautiful.”
“It’s amazing how there was a BSL interpreter for those who couldn't hear.”
“I would definitely go again. It’s funny and has lots of jokes, even if you don’t understand Italian, the facial expressions show a lot!”
“I was surprised that no one spoke at all! Now I understand what opera is, it must be hard for the performers to sing all the time and in Italian.”
“I enjoyed the opera. I would have liked to have been able to see the orchestra that was playing too.”
