Aspire & Achieve

This half-term has been exceptionally busy within the PE department, with pupils having many opportunities and experience to compete, coach, lead, referee and umpire across all age groups.

There have been many successful wins and individual achievements to celebrate.

  • U13 football girls played fantastic in the Welsh cup in dreadful conditions but were unfortunate to lose on penalties in ‘sudden death’, two of these players have now been selected to play for Caerphilly schools U12’s Football.
  • The U13 football boys played some great football, finishing runners-up in the URDD 5 aside tournament. The U13 and U15 football girls were not as successful but played exceptionally well together, with some girls playing football for the first time.
  • The Senior Rugby team have made a great start to the East Wales Championships, winning lots of games and rising to the challenge of college teams. The seniors also welcome Colchester Royal Grammar school at the end of term, who are visiting South Wales.
  • Our Senior netball team played some fantastic netball this term, finally beating long-term rivals Treorchy Comprehensive.
  • Our sports leaders in KS4/5 have led numerous coaching sessions during lunchtime and after school and have been a driving force for our younger pupils to aspire and achieve.
  • Our rugby leaders and referees have also been detrimental in the managing and officiating of our younger rugby teams, demonstrating great role models for our budding rugby players.

KS5 were also fortunate to attend Cardiff Met during this term, where they were able to experience first hand the high-tech fitness testing equipment and facilities whilst obtaining data for their A-level PE coursework.

We’ve had a great half-term and look forward to what Autumn 2 brings for our pupils and the PE department.

After half-term, all year groups will begin competing in the Caerphilly Cup with the school competing across all year groups from 7-13. The year 8 boys will represent the school in the Gwent Cup and continue their progress in the later stages of the Welsh Cup along with year 9 and the under 15 girls.

In other sporting news, congratulations to past pupil Billy Walkely, who gained his first cap for the Welsh rugby League senior team, and good luck to year 10 pupil Reuben West, who is currently competing for Team Wales in the WKU World Championships 2024 in Rhodes.
