On 12th April, 40 Year 9 pupils, accompanied by Mrs Ryder, Mrs Davies and Mrs Shipp, visited Cardiff University. The aim of the day was to give pupils an insight into university life. There was a workshop discussing some of the myths around university and the courses available; this was followed by an excellent workshop on student finance, looking at the costs involved in attending university, how to obtain student finance and considering what are essentials and luxuries – there was plenty of discussion on this topic!
At lunchtime, pupils had their first experience of managing their money, as they were given a voucher for £6 to spend in the university canteen and told that they must spend it all! They enjoyed sampling the excellent variety of food and there were some interesting lunch combinations.
After lunch, pupils were given the opportunity to tour the university with current students and then to ask students questions about their experiences.
Everyone agreed that it was a very interesting and informative day, with many pupils saying that university was very different – and better – than they had imagined. The university staff commended our pupils on their excellent behaviour and participation throughout the day.
