Aspire & Achieve

A Cardiff Medical Student ran an Accident and Emergency workshop for our Year 9 and 10 students, who have shown an interest in Science to give them an insight into Medicine. The workshop followed a case-based learning approach, which is a common teaching method in Medical Schools, as it encourages learning through problem solving.

The A & E workshop involved 6 stations that focused on common medical problems, such as diabetes, asthma, fractures, CPR, risk factors of a heart attack as well as vital signs, such as blood pressure and temperature. Each station was brilliantly facilitated by Year 12 and 13 students, who are potential medical school applicants. They were provided with a guide to aid their self-directed learning towards their allocated topic. This was a great opportunity for Year 12 and 13 students to teach their younger peers, build their confidence and improve their communication skills.

The student participants enjoyed working in pairs or small groups to deal with a range of patient scenarios. It was a very hands-on experience for the student participants who seemed to have enjoyed learning to use a range of medical equipment and playing the role of a doctor!
